Massage mood & environment
Before, during and after massage, take a deep breath, exhaling slowly (count to ten as you exhale) to aid relaxation.
Always make sure you are in the most comfortable position, whether offering or receiving massage.
Light candles, play quiet soothing music, such as instrumentals or water sounds, use soft lighting. Make your environment part of the healing.
Face Massage
Wash hands before offering massage & wash face before receiving massage.
Receiver of massage should lay on their back with a pillow under their knees for support.
Rub small amount of face lotion or massage lotion into your palms and finger tips. Gently, firmly place palms on the center of their forehead and move hands outward. Repeat several times. Do the same motion with fingertips.
Also, circular/spiral motions with thumbs on their forehead feels nice. Massage in gentle, circular motions on cheeks, temples, jaw & chin. Make a circle with fingertips from center of forehead, across brow ridge around the eyes, touching tops of cheek bones & up to ridge of the nose.
Aromatherapy Scalp Massage
Try a little aromatherapy massage on the scalp to alleviate stress, eye strain, headache, and quiet the mind.
Some nice essential oils for the scalp are: Lavender, peppermint, rosemary, chamomile, and eucalyptus. Use them separately - just a couple drops - always in a carrier oil, such as olive oil, which is very good for hair, skin, and scalp. (Never put essential oils directly on your skin. Causes irritation.)
Also, make sure you & the person receiving the aromatherapy likes the scent you're using. If they don't, use something else or just do massage.
Start at the base of the skull / top of the neck with person laying on their back. Gently, but firmly place finger tips under their head at the base of their skull and press into the grooves on the bottom ridge of the skull (at the hairline above the neck) on either side of the spine. Move hands upward under the hair line into the scalp, rubbing firmly, gently & slowly with fingertips. Massage the entire scalp. Gently run your finger through the hair.
Finish by putting hands lightly on cheeks / temples, and rocking the head side to side to relax the neck.
